Need to attach another cord to complete rosary for the dead

Postby toomuchyarn » Thu Oct 07, 2010 1:38 pm

I guess my newness to rosary making is showing. I am making a rosary for the dead to use next month. I decided to put knots between each bead. Unfortunately, I under estimated the length of cord I needed. Can I attach another cord? Or should I start over? I would appreciate any suggestions.

Dear Marguerite, wish I knew something to suggest as a solution for you. If there is a way to attach two cords together, I have not found it yet. It seems to your advantage that the wooden beads you are using could hide the tails if you are able to devise a way to splice two pieces of twine.

I'm grateful for the benefit of your experience as I had not started mine yet and will use a longer cord now. In another thread I saw photos of rosaries made with a knot between the beads and they are so lovely, I want to try that method, too.

A day or two ago I made a small sample using a simple overhand knot, maneuvering it as close to the bead as possible. I'm finding that the opening in my wooden beads is larger than usual and the regular knots are not enough to hold them in place. Some of the beads are getting loose, jumping over their knots and floating around where they should not be. So for this rosary it seems better to use a barrel knot with two wraps around my finger to produce a slightly larger knot.

Thanks again for letting us know about this beautiful devotion.

God bless you.

Rosary to the dead

Postby GratefulOne » Fri Nov 05, 2010 3:09 am

Hello ladies: I too have not been making rosaries for long, however I am very interested in making some of these types of rosaries. My dear friend just recently lost her mother, but I'm sure she was received with open arms by our Lord. I would love to try and make one...and you stated that "In another thread I saw photos of rosaries made with a knot between the beads and they are so lovely, I want to try that method, too." I would really like to see photos so that I can make them. Is there any way you can share them or refer me to where I can find a photo of one? I would be eternally grateful!

God bless you.

Rosary for the Dead

Postby Maire » Fri Nov 05, 2010 8:46 pm

Hello, Rina
I will remember your friend's Mom in prayers as well.

Here is a link to photos of rosaries with knots between the beads:
http://forum.olrm.org/viewtopic.php?t=265

If you are using nylon cord, you should do fine. (I believe that is what is shown in the photos.)
The knots did not go so well for me using hemp cord. My twine turned out to be too stiff to make small knots. So in the interest of time, I switched to Czech glass spacer beads in between wooden beads.

Marguerite gave the following link in another thread; it has some beautiful prayers:
http://www.2heartsnetwork.org/deceased.htm

Here is another site which has Acts of Faith, Hope and Charity spelled out:
http://www.breviary.net/allsoulsguild/c ... rosary.htm

There may be different variations of this chaplet. On each Ave bead some suggested prayers are:
"Sweet Heart of Jesus, be my love."
"Sweet Heart of Mary, be my salvation."

I'm not certain, but believe there is a special indulgence given to our prayers for the Souls in Purgatory this week (within the octave of All Souls Day).

Peace be with you.
Mary

Dear Rina, I'm happy that we are praying together and grateful that Marguerite told us about this gift for our beloved deceased.
Please pray for the forgotten souls, too.

God bless you.

Hi Mary, I clicked on the link you have under your signature and found out about making the cord rosaries for the troops. I spoke to the lead of our rosary makers at my parish and we'd like to dedicate next months session for making these rosaries...however, I clicked on the link to order the cord and it has been disabled. Is there another way I could order the cord? The crucifixes are easy enough to order from OLRM...please help. I think that this is also a great ministry. My brother was in the military when all this mess began in the late 80's early 90's....he has never been the same. I think if he had a rosary to keep him close to our Mother and Father, he wouldn't be far from God as he is today. This is why I think this ministry has called out to me.
Thank you and God bless you.

cord for camouflage rosaries

Postby Maire » Sat Nov 06, 2010 5:14 pm

Rina, thanks much for the heads up. I didn't know about FNT Industries (twine supplier).
I'm quite sure there is another cord, but need to doublecheck something before giving a definite answer. Will let you know.

Our troops are so grateful to receive their rosaries.
God bless you and the rosary makers at your parish.

camouflage rosaries

Postby Maire » Fri Nov 19, 2010 9:22 am

Good Day, Rina. We're still working on an answer.
Rosaries for our troops need to be a certain color to blend with camouflage uniforms. FNT tan and FNT desert camo are still fine to use if someone has those on hand.

Miracles do happen, but we probably should not count on finding twine in time for your 12/4 meeting. I hope that your group will be able to make the camouflage rosaries when supplies become available.

Your brother will receive graces in answer to your prayers. Our Blessed Mother Mary is always interceding for us.

My grandmother's brother was a WWII Soldier killed in the Bataan death march. I don't know if he had a rosary with him to help sustain and comfort him during that difficult time. This mission feels very important to me, too.

Whatever darkness we may experience in this life, Jesus is with us every step of the way.

Peace be with you.
Mary

Hi Mary! I'm so sorry it has taken me so long to respond...I got very ill and waited too long to go to the Dr. I ended up with pneumonia with asthma...I was in the hospital for almost a week. I had my husband call our rosary team leader and she was so graceful to come see me. She not only had the other rosary makers praying for me, but she also gave me blessed water from Lourdes AND had our priest come see me at the hospital and give me an annointing. WOW...my recovery has been miraculous and you would never believe how sick I really was. The dr said that if I was in my 70's not my 40's, he doesn't know if I would have made it! I just don't understand how there are still sad souls that don't believe. Thank you God!!!

Anyway...thank you so much for continuing to research this for me. My husband and I will be moving from the California Central Valley to Las Vegas. Surprisingly, we both have opportunities to work! I've been unemployed too long. I'm going to start or become a part of a rosary ministry when I get there...so, I would really like to find out all the information necessary to make these military rosaries. I'm going to want to start this ministry down there.
Thank you so much Mary!!!!
Gratefully,
Rina

Dear Rina,
I hope you may still see this. I've been thinking of you and remember you in prayers, hoping that you are feeling better every day.

We have found a new source for camouflage rosary cord... I started a new thread to give a link to the updated info:
http://forum.olrm.org/viewtopic.php?t=537
I'm grateful for your being called to this ministry. We are very blessed.

Please take good care of yourself as you are getting settled in your new home and new job. Get enough rest to keep up your strength.

God bless you and yours.

HI MARY!! Thank you so much for this info! I have been so blessed that I found a parish out here in Las Vegas. It is St Viator. I love it here! They have an incredible ministry program! So many ministries...and my favorite, ROSARY MAKERS!!! We meet every Tuesday morning and make rosaries. They are all wonderful ladies (of course because our Lady picked them all) and they welcomed me in right away!

They have someone that they work with that they make rosaries for the soldiers. So...you can guess who joined that ministry! hehe However, they make them with flat black plastic mission beads, thick black cord and plain black plastic crosses....

I will absolutely look up the site you just gave me and find out all about it and find out about the person that sends our rosaries to the service.

Thank you Mary, God be with you!
