Does anyone use hemp for cord rosaries?

Postby toomuchyarn » Sat Sep 04, 2010 7:08 pm

Does anyone use hemp for cord rosaries? I am thinking of making a rosary of the dead using wooden beads and hemp cord.

I have used hemp tp string a historical habit rosary(1862). I used hemp because I found references to the sisters' aprons being made of hemp.

hemp for cord rosaries

Marguerite, would you tell more about rosary for the dead? I have not heard of it before. This seems like it would be a very good devotion to pray for the holy souls in purgatory during the month of November.

Yes, a couple of years ago I experimented with hemp twine and used it to string wooden beads. The hemp has a different look and feel which appeals to me. The cord I liked best was an organic one from Europe... I think "Ecolution" is the brand. Trying to find some online now, the place where I bought it does not seem to carry this any more. Is there a particular hemp cord that you find works well?

Please post an update if you do make this rosary. It sounds wonderful.

Peace be with you.

Rosary of the dead

Postby toomuchyarn » Mon Sep 13, 2010 10:42 am

Here is a website wth information on the rosary of the dead
http://www.2heartsnetwork.org/deceased.htm
I am not having much luck creating links today.

I first heard of it when I was reading Ann Ball's book on sacramentals. I understand it was developed in the 19th century. It's 4 decades represent Jesus' forty hours in the tomb. I think this is sometimes called the rosary of the poor souls in purgatory. I am also thinking of praying it in November.

I hope I helped.
